Update on Renovate Europe’s "Renovation Fund For All Europeans" proposal

Launched in 2011, Renovate Europe is an initiative of EuroACE, the European Alliance of Companies for Energy Efficiency in Buildings, and enjoys the support of over 40 partners from industry, civil society and 15 National partners active at national level. It is a political communications campaign with the ambition to reduce the energy demand of the EU building stock by 80% by 2050 through legislation and ambitious renovation programmes. More information on the initiative here.

In May 2020, Renovate Europe launched a proposal for the creation of a "Renovation Fund for All Europeans". It aimed to give a powerful suggestion for the discussion within the European Commission (EC) around the preparation of a common EU Economic Recovery Plan post COVID-19, which, in Renovate Europe’s view, should ultimately ensure that energy renovation of the EU building stock plays a central role in getting the EU back on its feet. In this frame, a first letter presenting the initiative was sent on April 30 to the EC President, Ursula von der Leyen, and to the appropriate EU Commissioners (see the document here).
In the aftermath of its launch, the 39 original supporters have rapidly become 125, among which the ECTP.

The Renovate Europe Campaign Office received on July 29 a letter from the Director of DG ENER, Ditte Juul Joergensen, in response to this call to create a Renovation Fund for all Europeans (see the letter here).
In this response, the EC shares the views of the 125 signatories, especially on the need to increase funding for building energy renovation by leveraging EU and national budgets with private money and innovative mechanisms that could combine different financial instruments (grant, loans, guarantees etc.).
It is also important to note that DG ENER, which is in charge of the delivery of the Renovation Wave Initiative, now scheduled for mid-October, will also take due account of the recommendations stemming from Renovate Europe’s call.
